Saving Fred the Caterpillar

Save Fred Activity 1

Mrs. McMorris' classroom participated in a STEM activity called Save Fred.  Here is what she had to say about it.

"Save Fred" is an awesome, engaging way to kick off STEM in my classroom! Students work collaboratively, problem solve, and use very fun materials to accomplish the task.  To accomplish the task, students work in groups of two. Each group receives a plastic cup, four paper clips, a gummy worm, and a gummy Lifesaver candy.

The story behind the activity: Fred the worm has been spending his summer boating on the Great Lakes.  He was riding in his boat when it tipped over!  But he’s not too bright, he’s never learned how to swim and he never wears his life preserver. His boat capsized and he’s stuck on top of it!   Fortunately, his life preserver is in the boat, but unfortunately, he does not know how to reach it without falling off and drowning.  Help Fred get the life preserver on by only using the four paper clips given to you. You cannot touch the worm, the boat, or the life preserver.  Good Luck!

Saving Fred Activity 5

Your job is to get Fred off the top of the capsized boat, put his lifejacket on him, and get him back in the boat that you turned right side up all without touching any of the items.
