3rd Grade Expectations and Procedures

August 2017

Welcome Students and Parents!

This is going to be a wonderful year! We are excited to get to know all of our students and watch them grow to their full potential.  This syllabus includes expectations and procedures that are required in our third grade classrooms and throughout the school.

Attendance

It is essential that our students are in class to receive proper instruction and understand assignments.  Many of our lessons are hands-on or involve classroom interaction, therefore assignments can be difficult to understand or complete at home. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the school day and after lunch. It is your responsibility to show up to class on time and be prepared for the day. The school day begins at 8:01 a.m. It is considered a half day absence if you show up after 8:30 a.m. For additional information please see the Student Handbook under Absences.

Tardy

You are considered tardy if you show up to the classroom after 8:05 a.m. Three tardies equals one day absent.  If you are going to be tardy, you need to go to the office to receive a tardy slip to be admitted into the classroom. For additional information please see the Student Handbook under tardy policy.

When You Are Absent

In our classrooms there are boards labeled “Absent Work”.  These boards will have any assignments you need to make up. Please take the assignment that has your name written on it.  Due dates depend on how many days you were gone. If you are absent during a quiz or test you need to check with your teachers to determine a time to make it up.

NOTE:  You may get your work ahead of time if you know you are going to be absent. This work must be completed and turned in upon arrival.

Birthdays

All birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom.  You are welcome to bring a treat for every student on your assigned day.  Summer birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the school year.  Due to nut allergies please do not bring treats containing nut products.

Snacks

It is your responsibility to bring your own snack.  Please choose a healthy snack.  Cookies, chips, candy, and  junk food will not be allowed.  Due to nut allergies please do not bring treats containing nut products.

Planners

At the end of the day you need to fill out your homework assignment planner. We will go over the planners at the end of each subject as a class everyday. You need to circle assignments that are homework for that evening. Please remember to have your parents sign your planner every night. If you do not have a parent signature twice in a week you will miss Free Friday.

Turning in Assignments

All assignments must be turned in on time and into the designated slot. Assignments will be collected the day they are due. If a paper is incomplete you will need to turn it into one of the correct subject baskets. Please do not turn in the work to me or put the work on my desk.

ICU

This program is used to help you succeed.   You are required to do all assignments and do them to the best of your potential. If an assignment is not completed you will be required to take home an ICU folder to complete the assignment that evening. If the assignment is not completed at home that evening you will miss Free Friday to complete your missing assignment. Below is the school policy we follow for the program.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

ICU stands for Intensive Care Unit, just like the hospital. ICU is a communication tool, a shared, school-wide document that tracks missing student assignments. The document helps teachers and administrators communicate with each other as well as with the students and their parents. Students learn quickly that if they have one missing assignment, their grade is sick and needs attention.

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!

POWER OF ICU

The mission of ICU is to defeat student apathy through a culture where mastery, completion, and accountability are the standards for learning.

1.  Every student completes every assignment

2.  Mandatory extra time/help for all students

3.  Transformation of student grades to reflect learning components:

·    Immediate parent notification of missing assignments

·    ICU List shared school wide

·    Rescue=extra time before school and after school

ICU at Elder Grove School

In the attempt to support students in completing all of their extra practice there will be opportunities for you child to get the support necessary to be successful. Here are the times the rescue room will be available to support students.

·    7:00am-8:00am

·    Early Outs 1:00pm-3:00pm

·    3:00pm-4:00pm

Teachers will be giving out quality assignments for students to get the extra practice necessary for students to excel in the standard being taught. Students will be expected to hand in high quality work. If work is not done to the quality the teacher has outlined then students can be put on ICU.

Students CAN NOT opt out of going to the “Rescue Room” if they are on the ICU list. If their name is on the ICU list they will have to attend the before or after school “Rescue Room” session. Below is what to expect if an assignment is not completed or done to the quality the teacher has outlined.

-    1-2 Assignments: Email and text messages notifies parents. Assignment needs to be completed at home that evening.  If there are any missing assignments by Friday morning at 8:01 a.m., your child will not participate in Free Friday.

-    3 or more Assignments: Personal contact is made with parent to assign a before or after school rescue room. Students will continue to be in the rescue room until all assignments are complete.

-   At any time above 3 missing assignments a Parent Teacher Conference may be scheduled. The purpose of this meeting is to ensure contact information is correct and formulate a plan to support student better.

- 10+ Assignments: Family day at the Grove. Parents will be invited to work with their child to complete assignments.

Red Folders

Papers will be graded and returned to you in your red folders. Red folders will go home every Tuesday.  Please review all assignments with your parents. Your parent needs to initial and date that they have seen your assignments.  Red Folders are required to be returned the next day.

Assignments/Quizzes/Tests

If you score below a 70 on daily assignments you must redo the assignment.

If you score below a 70 on a quiz or test you will have to retake the test. The quiz/test must be done at school. Parents can view students’ grades via Infinite Campus.

Reading Log

For Reading class you will have a reading log. It is your responsibility to read books outside of school. You will need to keep track of your reading by filling out your reading log and having your parent sign your log. Every quarter you are required to read a certain amount of points in your reading level assigned by your teacher.  This reading log will help you to manage your reading towards your AR goal.

Books

Various books will be used throughout the year.  It is the student’s responsibility to take care of the books.  If a book is not returned in the shape it was received the student may be asked to pay to replace the book.  All books will be kept on shelves in the classroom, so this shouldn’t be a problem.  If your child needs to check-out a book for extra practice or studying for a test, we ask for it to be returned in the same condition in which they borrowed it.

Classroom/School Rules

The rules at school and in our classrooms are to be Responsible, Respectful, and Safe. If you follow these three rules we will have an incredible year!
